Born and raised in Halifax, NS., Janet E. Draper uncovered her artistic talents at the early age of seven when she received her first set of watercolour paints. Once the paint tin was opened, she began drawing and painting two of her favourite things: dogs and horses. And with her newfound love for painting combined with an entrepreneurial spirit that sprouted early, she began going door to door in her neighbourhood selling her paintings so she could buy more art supplies. This marked the beginning of her artistic path.
She attended the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts School, where she studied oils, acrylics, watercolours, printmaking, and sculpture. Janet resided in New England for a few years, where she studied with several well-known artists and had several ‘One-Woman-Shows’ for both watercolour and oil paintings. On her return to NS, she applied her passion for painting to yet another entrepreneurial adventure. She began teaching painting classes. She teaches weekly classes to children, teens and adults, conducts specialized workshops throughout the Maritimes and offers summer camps in the HRM. With her enthusiasm and knowledge, she inspires and hones the artistic skills of both the budding and experienced painter alike. The proof is in the results: many of her students have won national and international awards.
In addition to teaching in the classroom, Janet recently uncovered a way to teach outside the classroom: she developed and published an instructional book for artists beginning to explore watercolour. The book is aptly named “The Palette Able Workbook for the New Painter in Watercolour” and is a valuable tool to the new painter in their learning process and is available from Janet or on her website at www.janetedraper.com.
Although she is a published author and a teacher, Janet is also dedicated to perfecting her craft as a fine artist. Working mainly in watercolour, she experiments in all aspects of the medium and continues to explore varied subject matter, narrative pieces and collaging effects that inspire her creative work. Janet shows her work at many regional and international shows and has sold her work in many areas of Canada, the United States, England and Australia. She displays work in several local galleries and occasionally at the Art Sales and Rental Gallery at the Nova Scotia Art Gallery in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Janet was the founding member of the East Hants Fine Art Association and continues to be active in this association. She is a member of the Contemporary Art Society in Halifax and a former member of 14th Palette Art Group, Waverley, NS.
When time and weather permit, Janet enjoys painting on location to preserve Nova Scotia’s diverse scenery and capture the personality with her brush of horses and other pets. Janet is available to do commissioned paintings on various subject matter, including portraits of people, pets, farms and landscapes.
